June 10, 1942: Born as the eldest son of Kei and Katsuyo in Honamiida Gosanroku, Irimura, Wake-gun, Okayama Prefecture (present-day Bizen City) 1951: Entered the Department of Japanese Literature at Meiji University's Faculty of Literature. Moved to a boarding house in Tairamachi, Meguro-ku, Tokyo 1953: Moved to a boarding house in Hisagama, Ota-ku, and Nakanobu, Shinagawa-ku. Became a member of the Meiji University Literature Society and published short stories "Tokyo Girl" and "Going North" in a magazine 1955: Joined Misuzu Shobo through the introduction of Professor Kenichiro Watanabe. To care for his ill father Kei, he took a leave of absence from Misuzu Shobo and returned to his hometown, Okayama. After his father recovered from his illness, he began training in Bizen ware as his assistant 1957: Married 1958: First selection for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. His eldest son, Kazu, was born in 1961. He was recognized as a full member of the Japan Crafts Association in 1964. He held his first solo exhibitions overseas at the Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art in America and Point Clayre in Canada. Since that same year, he has frequently given lectures on Bizen ware at universities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Spain.
In 1965, he served as a visiting professor at Dartmouth College in the United States together with Shiko Munakata. Since then, he has exhibited many works both in Japan and abroad, and his reputation has grown. His works were later included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum.
In 1985, he was awarded the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon.
In 1988, he was appointed director of the Japan Kogei Association. In the same year, he became the first Japanese person to hold the exhibition "Bizen 1000 Years and Now: The World of Fujiwara Yu" at the National Museum of Modern Art, Korea.
In 1991, he held the "Yakishime Ceramic Public Exhibition" and served as the executive committee chairman.
In 1996, he became a professor at Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts.[1] On May 10, he was recognized as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property "Bizen ware." He became a Living National Treasure for two generations. In 1996, he was recognized as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure).
He passed away in 2001 at the age of 69 due to multiple organ failure.
