●Otsu-e: Originally, paintings on the theme of gods and Buddhas were created by Buddhist painters in the Otani and Oiwake areas of Omi (Shiga Prefecture) and were sold cheaply as souvenirs. They are also called "Oiwake-e and Otani-e" and are said to have originated in the early Edo period.
In the Genroku period, Basho wrote a haiku that reads, "The brush of Otsu-e begins with what Buddha?", and so Buddhist paintings were painted first. In later years, only the best-selling Buddhist paintings and paintings of flowers and birds were left to be painted and passed down.
