●What is the Sendai Tanabata Festival? It is held every year from August 6th to 8th.
Since Date Masamune, the founder of the Sendai domain, encouraged Tanabata and even composed waka poetry about it, it appears that some sort of event was already taking place in the early 17th century.
In Sendai, starting in the evening of July 6th of the lunar calendar (or July 7th depending on the era), people prayed for improvement in arts and crafts, and farmers prepared to welcome the rice field god and prayed for a good harvest.
As temple school culture spread during the Edo period, children began to write their wishes on strips of paper and hang them on bamboo poles. It was customary to then float these in the Hirose River the following morning.
Tanabata festivals like this one gradually fell into disuse with the changes that came with the Meiji Restoration, and then fell into further decline due to the economic depression that followed World War I.
So a group of volunteers from business families stepped up and revived the colorful Tanabata decorations in 1927, much to the delight of the people of Sendai.
Although the festival was suspended again due to the effects of World War II, in 1946, 52 bamboo decorations were erected on the ruins of Ichibancho Street, and the following year, when the Emperor visited the festival with 5,000 bamboo decorations, the festival quickly became famous nationwide.

Decorate with streamers fitted with paper balls.
It ranges in length from 5 to 10 metres.
All the materials are Japanese paper, and they are traditionally displayed in sets of five.
