The Kajiwara family has been running a pottery business in the Kuromuta area of ​​Arita town for over 250 years.
During the Edo and Meiji periods, the company was well-known for making large plates and bowls, and the father-son duo Kajiwara Kikusaburo and Tomotaro produced a 120cm plate, the largest in the world at the time.
In 1883, a large plate with a dragon and tiger design (Kaji Kenji Seijisha: Collection of the Mold Museum) was made.
In 1877, a large plate with a landscape painting was exhibited at the First Domestic Industrial Exposition (Tokyo National Museum).
In 1878, a large plate with a lotus pattern was exhibited at the Paris World's Fair (owned by the Victoria and Albert Museum, England).
It surprised people both at home and abroad.
Later, Tomotaro's second son, Kenichiro, took over the business and lived through the turbulent times of the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras. Currently, the fourth generation Kajiwara Kenichiro continues to create products in line with the times.
