●What is an Aoido tea bowl? It is a type of Goryeo tea bowl, the most highly prized of all Goryeo tea bowls, and is classified into various types such as Oido, Koido (Koido), Aoido, and Ido-waki.
These tea bowls, which had been made in Korea since the early Joseon Dynasty in the 16th century as daily utensils, were brought over to Japan towards the end of the Muromachi period, and were discovered and used as matcha bowls, as recorded in the "Yamagami Sojiki" by Yamagami Soji, a senior disciple of Sen no Rikyu, who wrote, "The Ido tea bowl is the finest Korean tea bowl in the world. Yamagami Soji discovered it and gave it to the Chancellor, who possessed twenty of them."
The base is reddish-brown clay that is rich in iron, the shape is deep and bowl-shaped, somewhat thick, with a large, high base and a chunky handle.
