● Shimadai is a celebratory tea bowl used for thick tea during the first tea ceremony of the New Year. It is said that the first Shimadai was favored by Joshinsai, and was modeled after stacked lacquer cups.
The original poem was written by Nagairi and is said to have been sent by Kawakami Fuhaku when he departed for Edo.
This is an imitation of Akaraku, made by stacking two well-shaped tea bowls, one large and one small, on top of each other with gold and silver foil covering the inside. In addition to Akaraku, there are also Kochi and Ame.
The gold one has a pentagonal base and a crane, while the silver one has a hexagonal base and a turtle.
The gold bowls are smaller than the silver ones, and the gold bowls are placed on top of the silver foil, creating a lucky stack of bowls.
When strong tea is poured into the bowl, the foil peels off, revealing the gold and silver mixed with the green, making it a very auspicious tea bowl to drink.
Size: Silver (approx. diameter 17.2 x height 8.3 cm)
