[Toshozan Hashimoto (real name: Mutsuo)] Satsuma ware
*Masazou Hashimoto (pen name Masayama) founded Toshozan Kiln in Kagoshima in 1939.
※In 1985, the second generation (Mutsumi) took over the Hashimoto Toshozan Kiln.
With white Satsuma as the main focus, we focus primarily on creating the base, and then perfecting the ceramic surface and the elegant base.

What is Satsuma ware?

It was started in December 1598 by potters who had been brought back from Korea by Shimazu Yoshihiro, the 17th feudal lord at the time, during the Invasion of Korea. Satsuma ware dates back to the end of the Momoyama period, when Shimazu Yoshihiro, the lord of the Satsuma domain, marched to Korea during the Bunroku-Keicho Invasions (1592-1598) and ordered Korean potters who accompanied him on his return to build kilns in several places within his domain and fire pottery.
Among them, one of the most talented potters, Kanekai, was invited to the castle town and built the Utsunomiya Kiln.
This was the first garden firing event held by the Shimazu family.
Later, the 28th head of the family, Nariakira, had a kiln built within the Isotei residence.
This is Iso Oniwa Yaki.
1855 (2nd year of the Ansei Era) Shimazu Nariakira opened the Iso Kiln in his residence.
In 1857 (the 4th year of the Ansei era), Park Jeong-kan of Naeshirogawa provided guidance to the Iso Oniwa kiln.
