The Eight Views of Omi are a selection of eight representative scenic spots around Lake Biwa.
The selection was based on the famous Eight Views of Xiaoxiang near Lake Dongting in Hunan, China.
During the Muromachi period, various Japanese landscapes were written in Chinese poetry based on the Eight Views of Xiaoxiang, but the current Eight Views of Omi appeared around the beginning of the Edo period.
Afterwards, it became popular as a subject for folding screen paintings and woodblock prints.
