●What is the Aoi Festival? It is one of Kyoto's three major festivals, alongside the Gion Festival and the Jidai Festival.
The annual festival of Kamo-Mioya Shrine (Shimogamo Shrine) and Kamo-Wakeikazuchi Shrine (Kamigamo Shrine), which is said to have begun about 1,500 years ago.
Originally it was called the Kamo Festival, but after it was revived in the Edo period, it began to be decorated with hollyhock leaves and came to be called the Aoi Festival. The hollyhocks used in the festival are donated to the Imperial Palace by both shrines every year.
Various events (pre-ceremonies) are held from early May, and on May 15th, the "Rodo no Gi" ceremony is held, in which people dressed in Heian period clothing parade a distance of about eight kilometers.
Aoi is a type of green leaf that is used to decorate the imperial carriage, imperial envoys, and attendants' uniforms and crowns during the ``Rodogi'' (procession).
This is called "Aoi Katsura Kikkei" and consists of a katsura branch entwined with the two-leaf hollyhock leaf, the sacred crest of Shimogamo Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine.
