●Tenmoku type: A tea bowl made to imitate the shape of a Tenmoku tea bowl, with a small, low base and an inverted cone shape.
Tenmoku tea bowls are black-glazed iron tea bowls made at Jian kilns in Shuijing Town, Jianyang County, Fujian Province and used at the Zen temples of Tianmu Mountain in Zhejiang Province during the Song Dynasty in China.
The name Tenmoku is said to have originated from the fact that during the Kamakura period, many monks from Japan studied at the Zen temple on Mount Tenmoku in China, and when they returned to Japan, they brought back the tea bowls that were used at the temple, and as they were tea bowls from Mount Tenmoku, they came to be called Tenmoku tea bowls.
