What are the Seven Herbs of Spring? There is an ancient custom that says that eating "seven herbs rice porridge" containing seven kinds of wild herbs and vegetables on the morning of Jinjitsu Festival (January 7th on the lunar calendar) will ward off evil spirits and cure all illnesses, and the seven kinds of wild herbs and vegetables used in this rice porridge are called the "seven herbs of spring."
Originally, this was a festival based on the old calendar, so it was an event held around February in the current Gregorian calendar.
The original "seven herbs" referred to the seven autumn herbs, and the one for the Little New Year, January 15th, is written as "nanakusa."
These seven herbs are also pronounced "nanakusa," and the ones celebrated on the 7th of the New Year are generally written as "nanakusa."
How to remember the seven herbs of spring
It reads as if singing, "Seri (water dropwort), Gogyo (sacred shape), Kobera (chickweed), Hotoke-no-za (buddha seat), Suzuna (turnip), Suzushiro (vine), these are the seven kinds."
