Bon Odori is an event held to welcome the spirits of ancestors who are welcomed during the Obon period, spend time with them, and then send them off.
Its origin is said to be the Buddhist "Nenbutsu Dance."
This Nembutsu dance involves dancing while chanting Buddhist prayers, and later developed into "dancing nembutsu" when the dancers and chanters became separate entities.
These folk performing arts became associated with Obon and became the modern Bon Odori dance.
The dance is performed on August 15th in honor of Obon, and on the 16th to send off the spirits of ancestors.
It began in the Muromachi period and is one of the most solemn events with a history of approximately 500 years.

Born in Kyoto in 1955.
Graduated from Kyoto Prefectural Technical College of Ceramics in 1975 and trained at Yoshida Zuisen Kiln. Trained at Ohno Zuisho Kiln in 1979. Won the Governor's Award at the Japanese Painting Exhibition of the Long-Term Technician Course. Won the Japan Nanga Academy's Outstanding Works Award in 1981. Opened Tosho Kiln in Higashiyama, Kyoto in 1983.
In 1985, he won the Japan Nanga Academy Prize. In 1992, he was selected for the Tankosha Biennale Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition. In 1994, he held a solo exhibition at the Osaka Asahi Gallery. In 1996, he was certified as a traditional craftsman.
