The Seven Philosophers of Rikyu are seven military commanders who are said to be Sen no Rikyu's most skilled disciples.
The old name for them is "The Seven Rikyu Men."
This is the first time we have seen the "Seven Samurai" named after Maeda Toshinaga (Hizen in Kaga), Gamo Ujisato, Hosokawa Tadaoki (Sansai), Furuta Oribe, Makimura Hyobu, Takayama Nanbo (Ukon), and Shibayama Kanmon, and this was spoken by Sen Sotan (grandson of Rikyu).
Then, in the "Koshinge Gaki" written by Sotan's son, Koshin Soza (Hogensai, 4th head of the Omotesenke school) in the summer of 1663, among the "Seven Disciples of Rikyu", Maeda Toshinaga is removed and replaced with Seta Sobe.

After that, the composition changed subtly with various tea books, and after "Kokin Chajin Keifu" was published in the Kansei period (1789-1801), the list changed to include Oda Uraku (Chomasu), Araki Dokan (Murashige), and Sen Doan (Rikyu's eldest son).
There are also various theories that include Arima Toyouji and Kanamori Nagachika, but these are all names that were used later and they were not originally called that way.
The only two who remain consistent are Gamo Ujisato and Hosokawa Tadaoki (Sansai).

Of these seven, the only one to become the successor was Furuta Oribe, who did not hold a large fief.

Toshisada Makimura (Military Department)
Masatada Seta (Cleaning Department)
Shibayama Munetsuna (Supervisor)
Tadaoki Hosokawa (Etchu/Sansai)
Nagafusa Takayama (Ukon/Nanbo)
