He graduated from the Faculty of Science at Kyoto Imperial University and is known for his unique style of tea ceremony (the current master, Bunmeisai, also graduated from the Faculty of Science at Kyoto University).

Born January 20, 1920 (name Yoshihiko) Hermitage name of the Horiuchi family (Chosho-an head priest)
After his brother, the 11th head of the Omotesenke school, suddenly passed away, he studied under the 13th head of the Omotesenke school, Sen Soza.
In 1953, he took on the name Sokan.
In 1997, he handed over the name of Sokan to his elder brother's eldest son, Bunmeisai, and took the name Soshin.
