[Sukyouji Temple]
Engakusan Sokyoji Temple (commonly known as Takuan Temple) is located on Irusayama in the northeastern part of Izushi Town, and was founded by Zen Master Daido Ichii of Tofukuji Temple, one of the Five Mountains of Kyoto.
The temple was founded in 132 by Yamana Mutsu no Kami Ujikiyo, the lord of Izushi Castle at the time, and is said to have been named after Ujikiyo's posthumous Buddhist name, "Sokyojidono."
It boasted being the only temple complex in Sanin, but when Oda Nobunaga invaded Tajima, the Yamana clan was destroyed and the temple fell into ruin.
In 1616, with the assistance of Yoshihide Koide, the monk Takuan was invited to revive the temple.
Since then, it has served as the central temple of the Kyoto Murasakino Daitokuji sect in Tajima to this day.
