●What is a Juko tea gourd? The original is the earliest made bamboo tea scoop, made by Murata Juko, the founder of wabi-cha tea.
Because of its shape, with a narrow joint in the middle and bulging at the top and bottom, Sotan named it a "tea gourd" and made a cylindrical container with ink inscription on the front.
Tea scoops originally used were medicine spoons made of metal or ivory.
When the tea ceremony began, it became known that a spoon-shaped spoon was not suitable for passing through the opening of a small tea container, and thin bamboo was instead found to be a more suitable material.
This piece is also made from sooted bamboo, but it dates from a time when the shape of the tea scoop had not yet been established.
Since there is almost no bending at the tip of the oar and its shape makes it difficult to scoop up fish, it is thought that it was used in a scraping motion.
