Mon wo hirake raku yooshi (open the gate, many fallen leaves)… In the “Zenrin Kushu” five-character couplet, there is the line “Listening to the rain, the cold weather ends, opening the gate.” If you open it, there will be a lot of fallen leaves.)
As I listened to the sound of the rain, the cold night passed, and when dawn came, I opened the gate and found leaves fallen all over the place.
The sound of rain that one had been listening to all night was, in the morning, the sound of leaves tapping on the eaves, creating a tranquil, secluded atmosphere. In other words, it represents the moment one attains enlightenment when one realizes that the sound that one had thought was rain was in fact the sound of leaves. [From the Zen Dictionary]
