● Tourishuu shuku wa yoshi (Eastern fence, beautiful autumn colors): Pure chrysanthemums blooming under the eastern fence. A small sign of autumn that is easy to lose sight of in our busy lives.
● Mon wo hirakebaraku yooshi (open the gate and many fallen leaves)… A five-line couplet from the Zenrin Kushu (Collection of Kudos) goes, “Listening to the rain, the cold weather comes to an end, opening the gate and many fallen leaves”
As I listened to the sound of the rain, the cold night passed, and when dawn came, I opened the gate and found leaves fallen all over the place.
The sound of rain that one had been listening to all night was, in the morning, the sound of leaves tapping on the eaves, creating a tranquil, secluded atmosphere. In other words, it represents the moment one attains enlightenment when one realizes that the sound that one had thought was rain was in fact the sound of leaves. [From the Zen Dictionary]
● Autumn leaves dancing in the autumn wind (koyoshufu ni mau)… The falling autumn leaves dancing in the autumn wind, the bleak scene of late autumn. It represents the way the leaves fall, showing their true faces.
It is important for people to cast away all impurities and evil thoughts, surrender to the world, and become "mindless."
● Clear breezes blowing all around in autumn (Clear breezes blowing all around in autumn)…A clear breeze blowing all around, covering the entire area with autumn scenery.
