●What is a four-sided shelf?...It is a small shelf made of paulownia wood, with a top and base board on all four sides, supported by two pillars and based on a two-sided odaiko, with the top board being larger than the base board.
The dimensions of the top board are 1 shaku 5 sun by 1 shaku 4 sun square, the base board is slightly smaller, 1 shaku 3 sun by 1 shaku 2 sun 1/4 square, and 1 shaku 4 sun 3 bu in height, and there are cloud-shaped force boards (fin boards) attached to the top and bottom of the two pillars.
In the past, the four-sided shelf was also called "handaisu" or "Rikyu mizujar shelf."
Koshin's four-sided shelf
There are two styles: one that is styled after Rikyu's and the other that is styled after Omotesenke's Hogensai Goshin's. The Rikyu style has square corners for the top and bottom boards, while the Goshin style has rounded corners.
The book "Sado Sentei" states, "The four-sided shelf with corners is the Rikyu style, and in the past it was called the Rikyu water jar Tana, or also called a half-daisu. The ones with rounded corners are the style preferred by Goshin."
The "Mochizukishu" of the Tea Ceremony states, "Although it is not much used around here, there is something called a four-sided shelf that was used exclusively at that time, and indeed its shape is that of an ancient style, with two pillars in the middle and fins on both the top and bottom. The shelf board on the top is wide and large, while the base board on the bottom is small in shape."
Other coatings include the following:
Pine wood lacquer, Seisai's favorite (rounded on all four sides)
Blue lacquer and red nails, Seisai's favorite (round on all four sides)
Shin-nuri paulownia wood, Jimyousai's favorite (something with corners)
A four-sided shelf decorated with red lacquerware, favored by Jimyousai (something with corners)
