●What is a Fukurotana (Shinoda) shelf? It is a large shelf made of paulownia wood that was favored by Rikyu, with a different shelf in the middle, a base bag with a kendonbuta lid on the bottom left, a shelf on the top right, and side panels made of kozasakashi.
Shino shelves are also called "Rikyu Fukurodana" or simply "Fukurodana." The names vary depending on the school.
It is said that Rikyu took a liking to an incense shelf made of paulownia wood by Shino Soshin, a master of the art of incense, which was based on the zushidana (a type of cabinet used since the Heian period to store stationery and cosmetics), and which he made for himself to display incense equipment.
In "Sado Sentei" it is written, "The bag shelf, Rikyu style, is a replica of the mulberry Shino shelf made out of paulownia wood. The paulownia is in the Rikyu style, and the tamari is original to Takusai."
In "Chayu Kojidan," it is written, "The Shino shelf was originally an incense shelf for the Shino family, who were the owners of incense. It was used by Rikyu and has been passed down to the present day. There is also a tradition of the Shino family using incense for tea."
In "Izumisou," it says, "It is made of paulownia wood and has four pillars. Half of the middle left side is enclosed with a door that can be opened and closed. It is decorated with hand tools made of Shoo incense, and the Mizushi shelf is a good choice. It is said that the shelf was made because the owner was proud of listening to Shoo incense. The Shoo-an room is called Daikoku-an, which is another name for the shelf. It is said that Daikoku loved bags, so it was given this nickname. There is also another theory that says, The castle guards built large fukuro shelves and stored their sleeping equipment and other tools inside them for various purposes, and as such they came to be called fukuro shelves. ``The fukuro shelves favored by Rikyu have two pillars with a shelf that runs through the middle, a single door that can be hung from the outside, and two sliding doors. After Sen no Rikyu made this shelf, Sho'o's fukuro shelf came to be known as the paulownia wood different shelf.''
"Cha Denshu" states, "There is the original Fukuro shelf, which is now called the Joo shelf." "The later Fukuro shelf was used by Shino Munenobu as an incense shelf made by Guo. It is not inferior to a daisu or stand, and is a shelf measuring 10,000 shaku in length. It is made of plain paulownia wood and has a thin finish. It was also a favorite of Kyū (Sen no Rikyu). It was the most favorite shelf of Guo, and Kyū also used heavy paulownia wood. The Fukuro shelf for incense is different, as it comes in orchid and other materials. It is said that Munenobu also liked the incense shelf."
