●What is an Ouchidana shelf? It is a double shelf made of cypress wood with a red lacquer finish. The guest shelf has a paulownia design on top and a chrysanthemum design on the bottom, while the kitchen shelf has a small shelf with a chrysanthemum design on top and a paulownia design on the bottom with openwork horizontal boards.
This shelf was favored by the 14th head of the Urasenke school, Mugensai Sekoso Soshitsu, who was known by his Buddhist name Tantansai.
This was a favorite of Empress Teimei when she offered tea at the Omiya Palace.
It gets its name from the fact that it is made of large inner paulownia wood.
