●What is a clam table? It is a small shelf with a clam-shaped top and base made of paulownia wood with a root grain, and three pillars made of white bamboo: one for the guest pillar, two for the kitchen pillar, and three for the facing pillar.
This shelf was favored by the 14th head of the Urasenke school, Mugensai Sekoso Soshitsu, who was known by his Buddhist name Tantansai.
The shelves are made of nemoku wood, and the grain resembles the stripes on the shell of a clam, hence the name.
It is based on the Hamaguri-dana hanging shelf, a favorite of the 4th head of the Urasenke school, Senso, and installed in the Rikyudo Hall of the Urasenke school.
