●What is a reed shelf? It is a large shelf made of cedar wood that was favored by Rikyu, with a width of half a room, sleeves measuring 14.5 cm, and reed mats stretched across it and held down with sooted bamboo.
The lower part of the wings is made of a fuki-nuki (a Japanese-style open-air space), and the pillars facing the room are made of 1.5 inch round red pine logs with the bark still attached, and in the corner facing the room, there are shelves measuring 1 shaku 8 inches and 8.4 inches square hung from white bamboo.
It is also called "daimedana" or "Rikyu daimedana."
In the case of a hearth, a pillar for guests is placed along the entire edge of the hearth, and in the case of a furo, a shelf is placed all the way across the tatami mat and serves as a base.
*Can be used with either a hearth or a brazier.
