●What is a Kiyamachi shelf?...It is a small shelf with three pillars and Ikkan Tsumeguro lacquer, the top and middle boards are triangular insets, there are side boards with incense-slit openwork on the two far sides, there is a triangular drawer, a fin board is attached to the pillar below the middle shelf, and the base board is a square with a part of the front cut off to form a pentagon.
This shelf was favored by Rokurokusai Zuiou Sosa, the 11th head of the Omotesenke school.
It is said that Kyokiyamachi shelves got their name because they were favored during the construction of the Mitsui family villa in Kiyamachi, Kyoto.
The Kiyamachi shelf has a triangular drawer where you can store light tea utensils, and if you remove the drawer it can also be used as a double shelf.
