●What is a Mikimachi shelf? It is a small shelf with a top and bottom board made of cedar, pillars made of cypress, a drawer made of fir between the top and middle shelf, bamboo handles, and feet on all four corners of the bottom.
This shelf was favored by the 4th head of the Omotesenke school, Hogensai Koshin Sosa, when he lived in Miki-cho, below Wakayama Castle, and is also known as the "Koshin shelf."
Goshin, who served the Kishu Tokugawa clan as a tea master, was given a mansion in Miki-cho, below Wakayama Castle, and traveled between Kyoto and Wakayama at a set period each year.It is said that Goshin had his young attendants create this during his stay at the mansion.
One theory is that he liked to make shelves out of leftover fir, cypress, and cedar wood from the same place, and another is that he received a fir folding box from the Kishu family, which he used as a drawer, and then used leftover wood that was already there to make inlaid shelves.
The museum houses the Koshin shelf, made of paulownia wood, which was favored by the 6th head of the Omotesenke school, Kakukakusai Haraso Sosa.
