●The Sanyu Dana (Three Friends Shelf) is a small shelf with a four-sided base and a round top, and two bamboo pillars. It was made in the early Meiji period by the 471st abbot of Daitokuji, Makimune Soju, using pine and bamboo from the Daitokuji temple grounds in order to promote harmony between the three Sen schools. Rokumune of the Omotesenke preferred lacquer on the pine top and base, Myosai of the Urasenke preferred two bamboo pillars, and Isshisai of the Mushakojisenke preferred koboreume makie (overflowing plum maki-e) on the edge of the top board, depicting pine, bamboo, and plum to represent the lasting friendship between the three Sen schools. Makimune branded this shelf with the inscription "Three Friends," and four shelves were made in total, three for the Three Sen schools and one for Daitokuji.
