●What is Shusendana? It is a double shelf made of cypress wood with a red lacquer finish, with the middle shelf shaped like a flowing water, and a small shelf attached to the guest and kitchen area, with horizontal boards decorated with maple leaf latticework of three different sizes - two leaves on the upper level and one leaf on the lower level.
This shelf was favored by the 14th head of the Urasenke school, Mugensai Sekoso Soshitsu, who was known by his Buddhist name Tantansai.
This teahouse, Shusentei, was built for Empress Teimei (wife of Emperor Taisho) in the Omiya Imperial Palace in Tokyo, and was based on a Joo water jar shelf, which she favored in the autumn of 1931. The original was made by Sotetsu, and is said to have been made from surplus materials from Shusentei.
