●What is a bamboo stand?...It is a stand of the "kusa" rank with four bamboo pillars, with a rectangular top and base both made of paulownia wood.
There are small and large ones, the large one was preferred by Juko and the small one was preferred by Rikyu.
Based on the "shindaisu," Murata Juko came up with the idea of using paulownia wood for the top and bottom boards and white bamboo pillars. This idea was passed on to Takeno Jōō, and it is said that it reached its current size during the time of Jōō and Rikyu.
The Jukoho bamboo stand has the same dimensions as the true stand, measuring 3 shaku 5 bu in width, 1 shaku 4 sun in depth, and 2 shaku 2 sun in height, and it is said that the pillars are made from bamboo umbrella handles.
Rikyu's favorite bamboo stand was intended for use in a hearth, with the "furo part" excluded from the stand base, and its dimensions are: the top board is 2 shaku 4 sun 8 bu in length, 1 shaku 2 sun 7 bu in width, and 5 bu 5 rin in thickness; the base board is the same length and width as the top board but 1 sun 2 bu in thickness, and the bamboo pole is 1 shaku 8 sun 1 bu in height.
The bamboo pillars with three sections are used as the guest pillar (front right) and the corner pillar (front left), and the pillars with two sections are used as the facing pillar (front right) and the kitchen pillar (front left). However, when there is only one three-section pillar, it is used as the guest pillar. Originally, the base of the base board is used as the kitchen pillar, and the base of the top board is used as the guest pillar.
Although it is designed for use as a hearth, when used as a furo, a small furo is used.
