●What is a Gogyo Shelf? It is a small shelf made of burnt cedar with exposed grain, a square top and base with hashibami (edge trim), and three pillars made of white bamboo, with two posts on the guest pillar, three on the back pillar, and one on the facing pillar.
This shelf was favored by Gengensai Seichu Soshitsu, the 11th head of the Urasenke school.
This is a shelf for placing a central brazier, but not for placing water jars.
Its name comes from the fact that wood, fire, earth, metal and water are placed between the top and bottom plates (Qian and Kun), in accordance with the theory of Yin and Yang and the five elements.
Since these represent wood (shelf or ladle), fire (charcoal fire), earth (earthen brazier, ash), metal (kettle, brazier), and water (hot water), it is customary to place a earthen brazier on top.
