● What is a Houseidana?...It is a double shelf made of paulownia wood surrounded on three sides by boards, with the front board having a sash groove and the front of both side boards carved into a bow shape. A bamboo nail for a ladle has been hammered into the inside of the board with a handle; it is a small shelf with no base board.
This shelf was favored by the 10th head of the Omotesenke school, Koushin Sosa, known as Hogensai.
It is said that this name comes from the fact that there is no base board and the boards on both sleeves seem to embrace the water jar, or "sei" (purity) for water.
The middle board can be removed, making it possible to perform shibadate, a traditional tea ceremony performed in a travel chest of drawers.
It is also said to be a Rikyu-style doko divided in two.
The 11th head of the Omotesenke school, Rokurokusai Zuiou Sosa, favored this type of pottery made from cedar wood.
*Both the ro and the furo can be used.
