●What is a tamenuri double shelf? It has four tamenuri lacquered pillars, with the middle board attached slightly higher and the base board being removable.
This shelf was favored by the 10th head of the Omotesenke school, Koushin Sosa, known as Hogensai.
This shelf is based on a triple shelf, and has been made into a double shelf by removing the top board and bottom pillars of the triple shelf. The small feet on the four corners under the base board have also been removed, and the base board has also been cut away, leaving only the frame.
This is the oldest type of double shelf without a base, and is designed to hold a portable water jar.
In the past, except for cave storehouses, there were no shelves that had a base and could be used to carry wet water jars, but the Tamagawa double shelf is a clever design that allows the use of shelves to carry and use wet unglazed water jars such as those made in Bizen and Shigaraki pottery.
*Both the ro and the furo can be used.
