●What is a Yamazato Shelf?...It is a small shelf favoured by Sen no Rikyu, made of paulownia wood with a rectangular base and a top board with a large diagonal cut into it.The base and top board are supported by three 5/8" square chamfered pillars, and split goma bamboo is laid on the edges of the base and top board.
The pillars are 5-minute square with fine chamfers and a 3-minute gap, and the inside dimension is 1 shaku 6 bu. The base board is 1 shaku 5.8 bu wide at the front, 1 shaku 8 bu wide and 4 bu thick, and the top board is 1 shaku 5.8 bu diagonally on the far side, 1 sun 5 bu left and 8 3 bu right.
The base is sand-polished and can be used while damp, so a wet unglazed water jar such as a Bizen or Shigaraki can be used.
One theory is that it was first used at a tea ceremony in Yamazato within Osaka Castle, and the other is that the shelf was made from a serving board from Yamazatomaru in Osaka Castle.
The original (real) version is said to have been sent to Yabunai Kennaka, and is a representative shelf of the Yabunai family, also known as Kotana.
The top and bottom boards are made of cedar wood, with bamboo lining on the edges, which is a style popular in the Enshu region, and some are made with spring lacquer or made of pine wood.
