●Kamakan is a metal ring that is passed through holes called kamatsuki on both ends of the kettle when raising and lowering the kettle during the sumidemae ceremony, in which the host adds charcoal to the hearth or brazier in front of the guests.
It is simply called "kan".
It is usually a ring with a diameter of approximately 2.5 sun, with one end cut off so that it can be passed through the hole in the ring of the kettle, and there are two of them in a set.
The most common material is iron, and there are Nanryo and Sunabari types.
The rings for the water room are made of brass, which is softer than iron, so as not to damage the kettle.
Usually there is no distinction between a brazier and a hearth.
When attaching a normal ring, the right ring is moved from the back to the front and the left ring is moved from this side to the back, but there are also left rings which have the joints reversed to normal rings, and these are considered to be true rings.
