●What is a fukube sumitori? It is a charcoal container made by hollowing out and drying a gourd and used in the sumidemae ceremony, in which the host puts charcoal into the hearth or brazier in front of guests.
In the past, it was customary to cut a new piece every year and discard it after it had been used for the duration of the furnace.
Nowadays, it is used before charcoal cutting and opening the furnace, and is not usually used during the New Year.
The way the charcoal is arranged is different from other charcoal containers in that it is arranged randomly. This is because the bottom is round and narrow.
