A feather broom (haboki) is a broom made from bird feathers used during the sumidemae ceremony, in which the host adds charcoal to the hearth or brazier in front of the guests, to sweep around the rim of the hearth, the top of the hearth, the prongs of the trivet, the brazier, etc.
The term "feather broom" simply refers to a "mitsubane" (three feathers), which is made by wrapping three bird feathers together at the handle with bamboo bark or something similar and tying them together with a string.
Depending on the direction of the feathers, they are classified as "right wing," "left wing," or "double feathers."
The feathers of the blue-and-white pheasant are the most highly valued, but there are also feathers made from cranes, wild cranes, swans, wild geese, blue-and-white pheasants, island owls, pheasants, eagles, hawks, and peacocks.
The way feather brooms are made and handled varies depending on the style.
