●Kamakan is a metal ring that is passed through holes called kamatsuki on both sides of the kettle when raising and lowering it during the sumidemae ceremony, where the host adds charcoal to the hearth or brazier in front of the guests.
It is simply called "kan".
It is usually a ring with a diameter of approximately 2.5 sun, with one end cut off so that it can be passed through the hole in the ring of the kettle, and there are two of them in a set.
The most common material is iron, and there are Nanryo and Sunabari types.
The rings for the water room are made of brass, which is softer than iron, so as not to damage the kettle.
Usually there is no distinction between a brazier and a hearth.
When attaching a normal ring, the right ring is moved from the back to the front and the left ring is moved from this side to the back, but there are also left rings which have the joints reversed to normal rings, and these are considered to be true rings.
Each has its own name depending on its shape and how it is struck.
Depending on the striking method, there are various types of marks such as "stone grain," "hammer grain," and "empty grain."
Depending on the shape, there are "sasage" (large horn bean), "bamboo joint" (twisted ring), "dragonfly ring", "Tomoe ring", "brim ring", "regularly stretched ring", "split ring", "insect-eaten" and "plain ring", and large rings are mainly used for fishing kettles.
