Originally, it was a vessel used for offerings to the gods, but it was replaced by a charcoal container and is now used before the true charcoal lighting.
The Rikyu style is a square shape made of cedar wood with rounded corners and stitched with cherry bark.
Sotan-ko's works are made of Ikkan-bari, but there are also other wooden products made of paulownia, cypress, and other woods.
