●What is a tea utensil bed (chagujoku)? A bed (joku or shitone) is an ancient name for a soft mat.
It is also called a tea utensil mat, a sencha mat, a bedspread, etc., and is called by various names depending on the school.
It is said to be based on the "zagu" (a mat or futon used when sitting) used by Obaku sect monks.
During the Sencha tea ceremony, it is placed under the seat in front of the tea ceremony to prevent the utensils from being placed directly on the tatami mat and to protect the tatami mat from damage.
Their sizes vary and this also changes depending on the school, but most are slightly shorter than the width of a tatami mat and are at least 60 centimeters in both length and width.
As mentioned above, it is based on a seat, so if you fold the seat in four to make a rectangle about one-third the size of a tatami mat, this would be the size of a formal tea utensil bed that was commonly used in the past.
Size: Approx. 75 x 60cm
