Most are made of ceramic, but some are made of metal and sometimes bamboo.
Available in a variety of shapes.
There are many different handle positions and lid shapes.
High-quality water pitchers in particular are characterized by their emphasis on decorativeness rather than ease of use.
The name of the shape also changes depending on where the handle is attached.
There are two main types: the "upper hand" type, which is attached to the top of the body, and the "lower hand" type, which is attached to the opposite side of the spout.
They are said to have originally been created in China as sake vessels, and are characterized by their gorgeous designs. A wide variety of painting techniques were developed, including colored painting, gold brocade, and a combination of the two.
