What is Korin Karuta?...The "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu" by Ogata Korin is a card that was written by a hundred poets. Among historical documents, there remains a draft that is thought to be a rough sketch for this card. This led to rumors among experts that "Korin Karuta" existed. As its whereabouts were unknown until recently, it was called the "phantom karuta." However, it was recently discovered in Kyoto.
These karuta cards are larger than the average Hyakunin Isshu, and feature pictures of immortal poets, 100 of which have the first half of the poem and 100 of which have the second half of the poem, as well as pictures of flowers, birds, the wind, and the moon. A total of 200 cards have been preserved in a state that has never been used.
The Ogura Hyakunin Isshu is a collection of poems selected by Fujiwara no Teika, a poet from the early Kamakura period, from imperial anthologies of waka poetry, totaling 100 poems, one poem per poet.
It is said that the name "Ogura" comes from the fact that Teika's mountain villa was located at the foot of Mount Ogura in Saga, Kyoto.
At the beginning of the Edo period, the game played by the courtiers, kaioui, and the "karuta" that was introduced from Europe were fused together to form Utakaruta.
During the Meiji period, the rules of competitive karuta were unified and the game spread throughout the country.
