●Kinrinji is a type of thin tea utensil and is said to be the beginning of Japanese lacquer tea utensils.
The body is cut to length, with a lid that rests on top and is rounded with a slightly wider hook on the outside.
It is also called Konrinji or Kinrinji Temple.
It is said that this tea utensil was originally a small sutra container repurposed into a tea utensil, or that it was used by Emperor Godaigo at Kinrinji Temple.
Excerpts from the Imai Sōkyū Tea Ceremony Diary, for the Rikyu ceremony on April 1, 1555 (Tenbun 24), mentions a "Kinrinshi tea caddy," which was used as a container for thick tea until the early Edo period, but is thought to have later been used as a container for thin tea.
