●What are Old Pine Tea Utensils? The original (real thing) was created by the 6th head of the Sen school, Kakukakusai, who devised a tea utensil design based on the teacup favored by Sen no Sotan (grandson of Sen no Rikyu), and he created dozens of them out of pine.
This pine tree is the Taian, a two-tatami tea room with a corner hearth that was built by Sen no Rikyu while in the camp of Hashiba Hideyoshi during the Battle of Yamazaki (Battle of Tennozan) in 1582, and is now a National Treasure.
It seems to have been moved there soon after the battle, and is now located at Myoki-an in Oyamazaki.
There is a pine tree called "Sodezuri no Matsu" (Sodezuri Pine Tree) here, where Hideyoshi's sleeve is said to have touched, and it was considered very auspicious and was treasured.
However, the pine trees died in the mid-Edo period, so it was made from this pine tree.
