●What is Kinma? It originates from Thailand and Myanmar and was introduced to Japan in the mid-Muromachi period.
This technique involves carving a pattern into the top surface of a layer of undercoat with a sword, then filling the recesses with colored lacquer.
It is similar to Chinkin in that it involves carving into a lacquered surface, but it is a unique technique in which the carving and filling process is repeated for each color, such as vermilion lacquer and yellow lacquer, and once all the filling is complete, the surface is ground flat.
The Kinma technique perfected by Tamakazu Zoukoku, the pioneer of Kagawa lacquerware, was inherited by his younger brother, Fujikawa Kokusai, and was established as the technique of Kagawa Kinma lacquerware.
Since the late Isoi Yoshin was designated a Living National Treasure in 1955 as a holder of the technique of konjiki, Kagawa has produced four Living National Treasures: Isoi Masami, Ota Hitoshi, and now Yamashita Yoshito.
