What is Sanuki Ikkanbari? Sanuki Ikkanbari began about 1,200 years ago when Kobo Daishi brought back the practice of applying persimmon tannins.
Woven bamboo baskets and plates are covered with Japanese paper and finished by applying multiple coats of persimmon tannin.
It is characterized by the use of old books as the washi paper, and even a small product can require up to 60 layers of paper for the underlay, middle layer, and finishing. This is then coated with persimmon tannin (specially made after being left to sit for five years), dried, and coated again.
To achieve the unique glossy color, the process of painting and drying in the shade is repeated dozens of times, taking almost a month to complete one product.
They are popular because the more you use them, the more their texture improves, and because they are all handmade, no two are the same.
●How to store the product: Although it has been treated to keep it moist, please avoid moisture as much as possible.
When placing food on the table, please place a napkin or something similar underneath.
If you polish it occasionally with a dry cloth or a cloth dipped in a little olive oil, the color will become even deeper.
With each passing year, the tannins will turn from light brown when young to deep black when they have dried up.
