●What is Genji? In the past, when the hearth was about to be opened, the Imperial Court would give out rice cakes called Boar's Baby Mochi to its subjects, and the container in which it was wrapped was called Genji Tsutsumi. This shape was used to make the incense container.
During this event, the Emperor pounds rice cakes using a drum-shaped mortar and a pestle held by the Moon Rabbit.
Currently, the imperial court event is being revived as a Shinto ritual at Go'o Shrine in Kyoto.
●It is used around the time of furnace opening (the day of the boar in October in the old calendar).
It was also said that opening the kotatsu on the day of the boar in October would prevent fires, so many tea houses chose this day to open their hearths.
It seems that zenzai was served to celebrate the opening of the hearth.
The tenth month of the lunar calendar (note) is called the month of the boar because the Big Dipper faces the direction of the boar.
