●Kiku-kiri is a pattern of chrysanthemums and paulownia flowers. It is a front view of a 16-petal chrysanthemum flower and a 5-7-5 paulownia flower arrangement, and is the crest of the Japanese Imperial Family.
The reason why the chrysanthemum came to be used as the imperial family's crest is because the 82nd Emperor, Emperor Gotoba, who reigned from the end of the Heian period to the beginning of the Kamakura period, was a lover of chrysanthemums and attached the chrysanthemum crest to all his items, including his clothing and swords.
During the Meiji period, it came to be treated as the emblem of the government (Prime Minister and Cabinet) and was equivalent to the national emblem of Japan.
This is the commonly used pattern of 3-5-3 paulownia flowers, and is different from the pattern used in the Imperial family's family crest.
