What is a Buriburi incense container? It is said to have originated from "Furibur," a wooden toy used on children's festivals.
It has wheels and a string at the end for pulling it.
When a child pulled it, it made a "Buri Buri" sound, so the toy was named "Buri Buri."
It became a gorgeous toy, and was apparently given as a gift to celebrate the birth of a boy.
It is said that the sixth head of the Omotesenke school, Kakusensai (Genso), who lived from 1678 to 1730, first cut up a "Buriburi" that he had received as a gift and used it to make an incense holder.
Decorated with auspicious lacquer paintings of "Takasago" and "Mount Horai", it is perfect for the New Year and before long it has come to be known as the first tea ceremony of the year.
