Born in Kyoto in 1942. Graduated from the art course at Kyoto Municipal Hiyoshigaoka High School as a potter in 1961. Born into a family that runs a ceramic overglaze business, he studied under his father, the first Suiran. In 1974, he took on the name Suiran II. In 1984, he won the Grand Prix at the 6th Kyoto Kiyomizu-yaki Exhibition and the NHK Chairman's Award at the 9th National Traditional Crafts Exhibition. In 1987, he was certified as a Kyoto Kiyomizu-yaki traditional craftsman. In 1993, he exhibited at the "Contemporary Kyoto-yaki/Kiyomizu-yaki Paris Exhibition," the first overseas exhibition in 125 years, and served as the executive committee chairman of the exhibition. In 2003, he was awarded the Kyoto Master Craftsman Kyoto Prefecture Traditional Industry Outstanding Technician Award. In 2010, he was awarded the Contemporary Master Craftsman (outstanding skilled worker) Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare Award. Since then, he has held numerous solo exhibitions and is still active in his field. His daughter, the next generation, is also creating pottery.
