Sarasa is a type of cotton fabric that is hand-dyed and produced mainly in India, Shaw, Persia, and Siam.
Its distinctive features are its vivid colors and exotic designs, which are created by dyeing rather than weaving into the cotton.
It was brought to Japan during the Muromachi period through trade with Ming China, and on trading ships such as Nanban ships and Dutch ships.
Like meibutsu-re, tea cores have been used to make covers for tea utensils, tea scoop bags, pocket tobacco cases, etc.
In particular, chintz fabrics that were brought to Japan from the Muromachi period through the early modern period are called "antique chintz" and are highly valued.
Japanese sarasa began with Nabeshima sarasa early on, and in the late Edo period, imitations of sarasa began to be produced in various places, with well-known items being Amakusa sarasa, Nagasaki sarasa, Sakai sarasa, Kyo sarasa, and Edo sarasa. The colors are generally subdued and not bright, but there is something exotic about them, and yet the patterns often incorporate Japanese elements such as fans.
