[Sliding door illustration from Jukoin Temple]
With permission from Reverend Todo Onozawa, we have carefully produced a Shohaori reproduction of the painting "Bamboo Tiger and Monkeys at Play" from the sliding door painting "Ibachi no Ma" in the main hall of Jukoin, a subtemple of Daitokuji, the head temple of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism.
This sliding door painting is a masterpiece by Kano Shoei, the father of the Momoyama period painter Kano Tokunaga. On the south side of the sliding door, there is a pair of monkeys holding a baby monkey in a loving embrace, and monkeys playing in a persimmon tree, with a distant mountain stream and a group of chrysanthemum bamboos in the background. The characters are depicted in a rich and expressive style.
